1. Banská Štiavnica is a medieval town with magical atmosphere

Banská Štiavnica has a magical atmosphere. The so called „Silver Town“ used to be Europe’s richest gold and silver deposit. It presents the historical buildings with wonderful architectural parts, churches, burgess palaces or mining houses.

2. The promenade „Trotutár“

This elevated pathway through the Ruzova Street has its vibrant atmosphere thanks to many cute little shops and best cafés in Banská Štiavnica.

3. The Trinity Square

This square used to be the centre of the town of Banská Štiavnica. It is surrounded by the Renaissance-Baroque palaces of the richest miners and the most dominant part here is the Plague column with Holy Trinity sculpture.

4. Old and new castle

The old castle was in the past a church, but it was transformed into a fortress during the period of Turkish threat. There is a museum inside now. The new castle used to be a fortress and signal tower in the battle against the Turks. We can find there nowadays an exhibition of the fight against the Turkish threat with unusual weapons.

5. Banská Štiavnica had the first Mining academy in the world

Banská Štiavnica has many mining tunnels drilled through the ground below the surface. The Mining Academy used to be the centre of education of all mining specialists in the monarchy and was the world’s first academy with a technical focus.

6. Calvary

The Baroque-styled Calvary with seventeen stations is located on the Scharfenberg hill (Sharp Hill). In the summer visitors can enjoy wonderful view of Banská Štiavnica and visit the churches and chapels which are open daily.

7. House of Marina – The Epicentre of love

This is the first unique Love Bank in the world. The main attraction of the Love Epicentre is the unique Archive of Love, created from the 2,900 verses of the Marína poem. This poem is officially perceived as the longest love poem in the world. Its main topic is not only author’s love for Marína, but also love of Slovak writer Andrej Sládkovič for Slovakia and for life in general.

Visitors can find here almost 100,000 love deposit boxes and keep their love by leaving photos, love letters, rings or tickets to the cinema from the first meeting in the „bank of love“. The exhibition here is guided, available also in English.
